#DPlaceDecides
In September 2014, Decipher Solutions hosted a debate session at our monthly self-improvement class, DPlace. The session was tagged DPlace Decides: Entrepreneurship Vs Paid Employment.
More and more, as the global community continues to encourage young people to become entrepreneurs and start up businesses, we sought to answer some questions at DPlace Decides including:
- How effective have Nigerian policies been in supporting entrepreneurship?
- Are universities really grooming practical entrepreneurs or is it merely theory?
- Should working professionals become extinct in society?
- Should we test Nigerian youths for Entrepreneurship Aptitude?
- What remains the major setback to promoting entrepreneurship in Nigeria?
- Does Entrepreneurship really mean that I must have my own business?
- Is the word “Entrepreneurship” misinterpreted in the Nigerian context?
- Can I integrate the concept of entrepreneurship into my paid employment?
- If everyone becomes an entrepreneur, where does the entrepreneur go to find labour?
- 19% of all attendees would rather be paid professionals
- 81% of all attendees would rather be entrepreneurs
Attendees would rather be professionals for the following reasons:
- Stability
- Knowledge base for future entrepreneurial endeavour
- Freedom: flexible time
- Be my own boss
- Unrestricted income
- Create impact
- Job creation
- Excitement and challenge
- Self fulfilment
- Value creation
- Enhances creativity and innovation
The 4 experts in a panel equally divided into speaking for entrepreneurship and paid employment comprised of:
