INSPIRE-YOUNG-AUTHORS PROGRAM: PROMOTING EDUCATION IN NORTHERN NIGERIA

Yellowhaven Foundation...nurturing the whole child

With the recent increase in the spate of terrorist and insurgency activities across Northern Nigeria, more people are now actively advocating for an increase in education standards and infrastructure across Nigeria especially in the Northern region. A group of dedicated and passionate Nigerians have risen up to answer this call with an innovative idea called the Inspire Young Authors Program.
The Inspire-young-authors program (IYA) was created by the YellowHaven Foundation to promote literacy among young Nigerians in order to improve reading skills and also to pursue careers in the literary world. It additionally serves as an introductory program to prepare participants for the Yellowhaven Bookclub program.

A one-day program, IYA is targeted at young people between the ages of 13-22 years in schools and orphanages and comprises of book-reading sessions, Creative writing tests and poem/short stories sessions. In 2014, the program has been hosted successfully in 3 locations across Niger state. IYA encourages young students to recognize that reading can be a fun and entertaining exercise which goes far beyond studying to pass examinations.

The program helped participants to understand their individual strengths and weaknesses with most of them expressing ardent desires at the end of the program to improve their reading and comprehension skills through the support of IYA and other such programs.

Quite noticeably, most of the participants could not spell or pronounce simple words with some students in senior classes unable read fluently and construct good sentences in English. The organizers of IYA are determined to overcome this barrier in the education system in order to help these students do better in National examinations and job interviews?

Although, IYA is a one-day program, the organizers plan to continue working with the teenagers through the YELLOWHAVEN BOOKCLUB, a weekly program that will require the collective effort of teachers and Yellowhaven tutors to effectively tackle the menace of illiteracy which remains a prominent problem in Northern Nigeria, and also to further inspire them to pursue careers in writing.

Yellowhaven Foundation is a non-governmental organization founded in 2013 to develop young leaders and entrepreneurs in Nigeria by providing consistent and effective solutions in the areas of Health, Literacy and Entrepreneurship.
