Looking for the best and most promising financial aid and
scholarships for African Students and developing countries, offered annually by
universities, organisation and foundations around the world?
A number of organizations, Governments and institutions offer
financial opportunities and scholarship awards for students from different part
of the world to study abroad. The financial awards are offered for either
undergraduate or postgraduate students or both; for African students
particularly, for developing countries or international students generally.
However students from Africa are as eligible to apply as any other candidate
and stand better or equal chances of being awarded a scholarship.
Below is a long list of Scholarships for African students
offered annually to study abroad. These scholarships are offered annually at
the time of publishing this list. If the deadline has passed, you can take note

The MasterCard Foundation is partnering with over 10
recognized universities and higher institutions around the world to offer the
MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program, a $500 million education initiative
that will provide talented yet economically disadvantaged students from
developing countries, particularly from Africa,– with comprehensive support for
secondary and university education. The scholarship will be offered to 15,000
African Students for a period of 10years.
Each year, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission invites
each nominating agency, university or university body to forward a specific
number of nominations for the commonwealth scholarship for developing
countries. Each nominating agency/university/university body is responsible for
its own selection process, and in most cases they will set a closing date in
the months preceding the CSC’s deadline for nominations. Approximately 200-230
scholarships are awarded each year.
Each year the OFID (The OPEC Fund for International
Development) calls for application for qualified undergraduate students
prospecting to pursue masters degree to apply for the OFID Scholarship. The
OFID Scholarship is awarded to support an undergraduate student from any
developing country, to pursue higher education in a relevant field of
development, in any recognized university/college in the world. Through its
scholarship scheme, OFID aims to help highly motivated, highly driven
individuals overcome one of the biggest challenges to their careers – the cost
of advanced professional or graduate training. The winner will receive up to
US$100,000
The Australia Awards for Africa is an initiative of the
Australian Government aimed to maximize the benefit of the Australian
Government’s extensive scholarship programs, and to support enduring ties
between Australia and neighboring African Countries. Australian Development
Scholarships (ADS) are available for full-time Postgraduate Diploma or Master
Degree studies for African Nationals at Australian universities. Scholarship
covers Full financial support for the postgraduate programme.
Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are a joint initiative
between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID) and UK
universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth
countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK. Since
establishment in 1959, 27,000 individuals have benefited, with 120 to 150
awards every year. Scholarships are open to Commonwealth citizens. Awards are
for postgraduate study (Masters and PhD).
Nominations from agencies must be received in London by 31
December in the year preceding the award.
Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for 12 Developing
Countries to study for Undergraduate and Master’s degree programme. The
scholarship covers both the tuition fee and living expenses to the amount of
SEK8,000 (€878.9799) per month. Scholarship holders within the SI Study
Scholarships will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. The
travel grant is a lump sum of SEK 10.000.(€ 1098.7249).
University College London (UCL) and the Africa Educational
Trust (AET) have agreed to collaborate in a scheme to enable students from
Africa, who are financially unable to study in the UK, to pursue full-time
undergraduate studies at UCL. Two full bursaries are available annually. Each
bursary consists of full tuition fees and a maintenance allowance for the
duration of the student’s programme of study, as well as economy air travel
to/from the UK at the beginning and end of the bursary-holder’s degree
programme.
UCSC, Italy offer 12 full Masters scholarships that include
tuition and board for students from eligible African countries. 12 full tuition
and 39 partial scholarships will be awarded. The full scholarships include
tuition and board for the duration of the program. Candidates that do not qualify
for the full scholarship may be selected for the partial scholarships that
cover part of tuition, whereas all other living costs and travel will be at the
expense of the student.
VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing
countries to study for a master or training programme in Flanders, Belgium. 180
Masters & 70 training Scholarships in Belgium will be awarded for students
from Developing countries in 2012 (50% of African students and almost 50% for
Women). The scholarship covers all related expenses (full cost).
The University College London (UCL) collaborates with the
United World Colleges (UWC) in a financial aid scheme to enable graduates of
UWC, who are financially unable to study in the UK, to pursue full-time
undergraduate studies at UCL. Each bursary will consist of full tuition fees
and a maintenance allowance for the duration of the student’s programme of
study, as well as international economy air travel to/from the UK at the
beginning and end of the bursary-holder’s degree programme.
10. Reach Oxford Scholarships for Undergraduate Students forDeveloping Countries, University of Oxford
A number of Oxford colleges offer Reach Oxford scholarships
(formerly Oxford Student Scholarships) to students from developing countries
who, for political or financial reasons, or because standard educational
facilities do not exist, cannot study for a degree in their own countries.
Scholarship winners will study at Oxford University, UK under any undergraduate
course of study, except Medicine due to the course length and expense. The scholarship
covers University and college fees, full grant for living expenses, return
flight to the UK at the start and end of the course per year.
11. Loughborough University Graduate School DevelopmentTrust Africa Scholarships: Full-fee Scholarships
Loughborough University, UK offers full-fee scholarships for
international full-time taught postgraduate students who are currently
domiciled (permanently living) in Africa, through The Loughborough University
Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships. The scholarships will
cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for
one year (replacing any Departmental or Loughborough University scholarships or
bursaries you may already have been awarded).
Within the programme for international courses and training
programmes, Commission universitaire pour le Développement (CUD) grants 150
scholarships for participation into the courses and 70 for participation into
the training programmes. Only applicants originating in developing countries
mention, qualify for selection. To be eligible, candidates must reside and work
in their country at the time of the introduction of the file.
DAAD Scholarship Programmes have benefited hundreds of
African students since inception. The scholarships are awarded each year to
postgraduate students wishing to study for a Master’s or PhD degree. The DAAD
scholarships can support students who want to study in their country (In
Country Scholarships) or abroad.
The main objective of the Norwegian Quota Scholarship Scheme
for developing countries is to contribute to capacity building through
education that will benefit the home country of the students when they return.
Most universities and university colleges in Norway participate in the Quota
scheme. Most of the programmes offered are at Master’s or PhD level, but the
Quota Scheme also offers certain Bachelor’s study programmes. Each student
receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would do in an
equivalent educational programme.
The Government of Taiwan through the Ministry of Education
(MOE) has established the Taiwan Scholarship Program for foreign students
(Undergraduate and Postgraduate) in an effort to encourage outstanding
international students to undertake degree studies in Taiwan so as to
familiarize themselves with the academic environment in Taiwan and promote
communication, understanding and friendship between Taiwan and countries around
the world. Scholarship includes Tuition and payment of academic fees, including
credit fee. MOE awards each recipient per semester up to NTD40,000.
The Government of the Czech Republic offers a number of
undergraduate, Master’s and Doctoral scholarships within the framework of its
Foreign Development Assistance Programme in support of the study of foreign
nationals from developing countries at public institutions of higher education
in the Czech Republic.
The Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships are offered
annually to the most talented doctoral students in the humanities and social
sciences to encourage emerging talents in Canada and Developing Countries. Up
to 15 Trudeau Scholarships are awarded each year to support doctoral candidates
pursuing research of compelling present-day concern, touching upon one or more
of the four themes of the Foundation. The Scholarship of up to $180,000
The University of Warwick International Office and the Allan
and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust (ANFCT) award up to 5 scholarships of
£10,000 each to students from Sub-Saharan Africa each year.
The Africa LLM/MSc Tercentenary Scholarship is open to all
African students (with preference to West Africa) who have applied to an
on-campus LLM or the on-campus MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice at
Edinburgh Law School. The scholarship will cover the costs of postgraduate
tuition fees for one academic year. The successful applicant will also be given
a partial maintenance grant (£6500) to help fund their studies at the
University of Edinburgh.
The Wolfson Foundation seek to support excellence through
the Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships in Humanities for international students
at University of Oxford. Funding covers 100% of university and college fees,
and a grant for living costs of at least £15,000 per annum. Funds for research
and training costs will also be available to scholars.
The Weidenfeld Scholarships and Leadership Programme
cultivates the leaders of tomorrow from transition and emerging economies by
providing outstanding university graduates and young professionals with the
opportunity to pursue fully funded graduate studies at the University of Oxford
and access to a comprehensive programme of leadership development, long-term
mentoring and networking. Funding covers 100% of university and college fees,
and a grant for living costs (the rate in 2011-12 was £13,500)
The 7UP Harvard Business School Scholarship was created by
Seven Up Bottling Company Plc of Nigeria to commemorate its 50th anniversary
and aligns with the Company’s overall vision of creating a greener future for
promising Nigerians. The scholarship is for a Nigerian citizen. The scholarship
covers tuition, board and travel expenses for both years of the MBA programme.
The University of Sydney, Australia offers Undergraduate
(Bachelors) and Postgraduate Masters Scholarship for International Students.
Undergraduate: The University of Sydney award 30
scholarships of AUD$10,000 each per annum, available for a maximum of three
years, (total value AUD$30,000) for any Undergraduate program offered at the
University (subject to the recipient maintaining satisfactory academic progress
each year).
Postgraduate: 30 scholarships of AUD$10,000 each, available
as a one-off award (total value AUD$10,000) for any Postgraduate Coursework
program offered at the University of Sydney.
The Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) is offered
for international students who want to pursue Bachelors, Masters and PhD
degrees in Korean Universities. The scholarship is aimed to provide
international students with an opportunity to conduct advanced studies at
higher educational institutions in Korea, to develop global leaders and
strengthen Korea-friendly networks worldwide.
The University of Edinburgh offers three Julius Nyerere
Master’s scholarships to students from Tanzania for postgraduate Master’s study
in any subject offered by the University. The Master’s Scholarships covers the
full overseas tuition fee, living costs of £10,000, and a return flight from
Tanzania to the UK.
Loughborough University offers over 100 postgraduate
scholarships taught programme for the 2011/2012 academic year, to new
self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in
a country outside the European Union (EU). These scholarships will be to the
value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to
the student’s tuition fee account.
The purpose of the Education for Sustainable Energy
Development [ESED] scholarship is to support outstanding students from
developing countries pursuing advanced studies in sustainable energy
development and to encourage meaningful contributions to the collective body of
knowledge about this subject. These scholarships are available to up to 10
outstanding students from developing countries and economies in transition, for
a period of up to two years for Masters Degree, awarded annually. Scholarships
of US$ 23,000 per year for up to two years are offered for Masters level
students.
The Clarendon Fund scholarships open to all graduate
(Masters, MBA and Doctoral degree) applicants regardless of Nationality for
entry into University of Oxford UK. All Clarendon Scholarships cover tuition
and college fees in full and a generous grant for living expenses.
The University of Adelaide offers Adelaide Scholarships
International (ASI) scheme for international students undertaking postgraduate
research study for Master’s and Doctoral degrees. The purpose of the financial
award programme is to attract high quality overseas postgraduate students to
areas of research strength in the University of Adelaide to support its
research effort. Benefits are; Course tuition fees for two years for a Masters
degree by Research and three years for a Doctoral research degree (an extension
is possible for doctoral programs only) and An annual living allowance of
approximately $23,728 (2012 value) for the normal duration of the program;
Canon Collins Trust invites applications from students from
Southern Africa (Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South
Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe) for scholarships for Masters study at the
following universities: King’s College London, SOAS, University of Sussex,
University of Edinburgh, University of Leeds and University of Sheffield.
Scholarship covers Full tuition, stipend, travel and other support whilst in
the UK
St Antony’s College Oxford in partnership with the
international integrated energy company Eni, is offering three students from
African universities in Angola, Ghana & Nigeria, the opportunity of fully
funded scholarships, including fees and living expenses, to undertake
postgraduate study at the Master’s level at the University of Oxford commencing
in October 2011. The Eni Masters scholarship is aimed toStrengthening African
Leadership.
The Durham University will be awarding three postgraduate
scholarships to outstanding candidates from West Africa- Benin, Cameroon,
Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo. Each scholarship is awarded in the form of a
one-year postgraduate taught tuition fee waiver; one each in the Faculty of
Social Sciences and Health, Faculty of Science and Durham Business School.
Students do not have to pay for their tuition fees but are only responsible for
accommodation and living costs during their stay in the UK.
In association with the Tanzanian High Commissioner for the
UK and the Institute of Accountancy Arusha (IAA), Coventry University offer a
limited number of full tuition fee scholarships for Tanzanian nationals to
study for MSc/MBA Oil & Gas Management,MSc Finance & Investment and MBA
Logistics
In association with the Ghana High Commissioner for the UK
and the Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC) Coventry University are
delighted to offer a limited number of full tuition fee scholarships for
Ghanaian nationals to study for MSc/MBA Oil & Gas Management
Each year, the Rhodes scholarship is offered to about 83
Rhodes Scholars selected from 14 countries or groupings of countries around the
world (including select African Countries) to study for postgraduate degree at
university of Oxford. They are outstanding young women and men of diverse
backgrounds and interests who show strong potential to be public-spirited
leaders for the world’s future.
The Oppenheimer Fund Scholarships are open to applicants who
are ordinarily resident in South Africa applying to start any new degree
bearing course, with the exception of PGCert and PGDip courses, at the
University of Oxford. The Fund promotes links between the University of Oxford
and South African Universities. Scholarship recipients receive a financial
support grant of up to £6500 of fees or living costs.

Through the generosity of the Allan and Nesta Ferguson
Charitable trust, three Ferguson scholarships have been established for African
Students (African nationals and resident in Africa), who wish to undertake a
taught masters course at SOAS. Each Ferguson Scholarship is valued at £14,956
and lasts for one year. The scholarships can be used for fees and the remainder
towards maintenance.
The Trustees of the Greendale Foundation provide access to
the INSEAD MBA programme to disadvantaged Southern (Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique,
South Africa) and East (Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia or Zimbabwe) Africans who are
committed to developing international management expertise in Africa and who
plan their careers in the Southern and East African regions. Scholarship
recipients must return to work in these African regions within 3 years of
graduation. €35,000 for each scholarship recipient
A successful entrepreneur since he graduated from INSEAD,
Freddy Salem (MBA ’66) has run several private businesses in West Africa,
Russia and the US. Keen to foster economic development in West Africa, Freddy
Salem supports education initiatives that develop business talent for the
region. In awarding these scholarships, INSEAD particularly seek candidates
from Nigeria, Ghana, Togo and Benin. Up to €20,000 financial aid will be award
The Goldman Sachs scholarships for African nationals at
INSEAD are offered by Goldman Sachs, a leading global investment banking,
securities and investment management firm. The business scholarship is designed
to give candidates from African countries access to a world-class MBA
education. The scholarship winners will be allocated a Goldman Sachs’ mentor
throughout the 10-month MBA programme. Up to €15,000 per class will be awarded
The Waverley Fund awards scholarship for Masters (MSc) in
African Studies to academically excellent students from disadvantaged backgrounds
who have shown the potential to make a significant contribution in their future
careers. The African Studies Centre, University of Oxford, UK, was launched in
October 2004, and attracts extremely high quality graduates. 100% of university
and college fees, and a grant for living expenses of £13,590 p/a (including
return flights) will be awarded for the full duration of a student’s fee
liability for the agreed course.
The CASTME Scholarship is an annual scholarship award for
postgraduate students from commonwealth countries to study for Masters Degree
at the University of Westminster UK. There is one general scholarship (ie
students from any Commonwealth country may apply) and another for students from
Mauritius. In particular the candidates will need to show how this award will
enable them to enhance the teaching of Science, Technology or Mathematics in

young professors from universities from developing and emerging countries in
Africa, Asia, or Latin America, pursuing advanced research in areas bridging
the fields of international and development studies, broadly defined, and
working in disciplines such as anthropology, history, law, politics and
political science, and economics. Scholars receive a contribution towards
living expenses. The Institute will cover costs of travel and visas for
participants as well accommodation costs.
The University of Sheffield is pleased to offer a range of
undergraduate (BA, BSc, BEng, MEng) and postgraduate scholarships to students
from Nigeria who show exceptional academic potential and are starting their
studies at the University of Sheffield in September.
The scholarships are worth £6,500 each of your
under/postgraduate course tuition fee per year. This will take the form of a
tuition fee reduction.
Masters Scholarship offered at the University of Edinburgh
for student from UK/EU and Developing Country pursuing Global Development
Academy programmes. Each scholarship will cover the overseas rate of tuition
fee, while a further two scholarships will cover the UK/EU rate of tuition fee
only.
The University of Edinburgh offers one full-time Master’s
scholarship for eligible programmes offered by the University through the
Edinburgh Global Health Academy Master’s Scholarship for African and Developing
Countries. The scholarship will cover the UK/EU “home” rate of tuition fee of
up to £5,750.
The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), with
financial support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, announces
competitions for Dissertation-completion fellowships and Early-career
postdoctoral fellowships in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Africa
Fellowship programme in Netherlands for Masters, PhD and
Short Courses applicants from Developing Countries. Priority are given to
candidates who live and work in Sub-Saharan Africa. The fellowship is a
supplement to the candidate’s salary and a contribution towards the expenses
related to the course or study programme.
The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund- MMMF provides grants to
women from developing countries to help further their education and strengthen
their leadership skills to improve the lives of women and children in
developing countries. The MMMF offer scholarships for women from developing
countries who are currently studying in the United States or Canada. The MMMF
awards grants are approximately $12,000 each.
Griffith University has one (1) $3,000 tuition scholarship
for a student from Botswana and five (5) partial tuition scholarships for South
African Students – covering tuition for a maximum of two semesters not in
excess of AUD$1,500 per semester. The scholarships are on offer to students
from Botswana and South Africa commencing in January or July
Aalto University provides a wide range of Master’s
programmes which are taught entirely in English, targeted for all
nationalities. The programmes listed above charge a tuition fee of 8000
EUR/academic year from none—EU/EEA-citizens. To that effect, Aalto University
offers a number of full scholarships for non-EU/EEA (international) citizens in
these programmes.
The African Presidential Scholars Program offers early
career faculty from Ghana, Liberia, South Africa and Uganda the opportunity to
collaborate with faculty and students at the University of Michigan USA during
residencies of two to six months Uganda in the field of African Heritage,
African Social Research, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, And
Mathematics). At the University of Michigan, scholars will have access to
library and research materials to forward their own research programs,
scholarly writing, course development, doctoral work, or other relevant
activity.
The Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA)
Fellowship Program was founded in 1993 at the Georgetown University Law Center
in Washington, D.C., in order to train women’s human rights lawyers from Africa
who are committed to returning home to their countries in order to advance the
status of women and girls in their own countries throughout their careers. Over
50 women’s human rights advocates from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya,
Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania,
Uganda and Zimbabwe have participated in the LAWA Program, and we hope to
include Fellows from additional countries in the future. The LAWA Fellowship
provides the tuition for the Foundations of American Law and Legal Education
Course (a U.S. $2,200 benefit) and for the LL.M. degree (a U.S. $42,065
benefit) at the Georgetown University Law Center, as well as professional
development training.
Since 1974, IFS has provided more than 7,000 Research Grants
to young scientists in some 100 developing countries in Africa, Asia and the
Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean. New applicants wishing to apply
for a research grant to IFS are invited to submit their research application
form before the deadline. Maximum budget of USD 12,000
The Skoll Scholarship is a competitive scholarship for
incoming MBA students at Oxford University who pursue entrepreneurial solutions
for urgent social and environmental challenges. The Scholarship provides
funding and exclusive opportunities to meet with world-renowned entrepreneurs,
thought-leaders and investors. The Skoll Scholarship covers full costs of Said
Business School tuition and college fees and also covers partial living
expenses based on need, up to an additional £8,000.
Africa Guest Researcher Scholarships at Nordic Africa
Institute (NAI), Sweden for African Researchers/Scholars 2013 – With preference
to Women Researchers. The Guest Researchers’ scholarship includes; a return
air-fare (economy class), accommodation, a subsistence allowance of SEK
(Swedish kronor) 300 (approx. USD 45) a day plus an installation grant of SEK
2,500 (approx. USD 370) and a shared office and free photocopying facilities up
to a maximum of 1,000 copies.
Chalmers University of Technology will grant over 40
scholarships (in 2012) funded by the Chalmers foundation, to all citizens from
non-EU/EEA countries who are liable to pay tuition fees for Swedish university
education for advance Level and Masters Programme. The Avancez scholarships
covers 75% of the tuition fee for all available Master´s programmes at
Chalmers. For students with excellent academic performance during the first
year of studies, the scope of these scholarships may be increased to cover 85%
of the tuition fee during the second and final year of studies.
The Lund University Global Scholarship programme is targeted
at top academic students who are citizens of countries from outside the
European Union/European Economic Area (and Switzerland). Top academic students
have a proven record of achieving consistently high grades in previous studies.
Scholarships may cover 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% of the tuition fee.
The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Fellowships is aimed
to develop leadership, address priority regional development issues, and build
partnerships and linkages between Australian organisations and partner
organisations in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Latin
America, the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East.
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a Full cost scholarship
for postgraduate study and research in any subject at the university of
Cambridge England for International students. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship
is open for Citizens of all countries other than the USA (except the United
Kingdom) and US citizens normally resident outside the USA.
Launched by the Schlumberger Foundation in 2004, the Faculty
for the Future fellowships are awarded to women from developing and emerging
economies who are preparing for PhD or post-doctoral study in the physical
sciences and related disciplines at top universities abroad for their
disciplines. The long-term goal of the Faculty for the Future program is to
generate conditions that result in more women pursuing scientific disciplines.
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA),
as part of its programme to support member States, is partnering with the Mo
Ibrahim Foundation to promote leadership development through a practical and
on-the-job fellowship. The programme is aimed at enabling young African
professionals to develop leadership capacity in a large institution, gain
knowledge of the functioning of the United Nations, have better understanding
of Africa’s socio-economic challenges and contribute to the analytical,
advocacy and policy advisory work of the Commission. Fellowships are awarded
for a period of 12 months.
The objective of this scholarship scheme is to establish –
as a permanent memorial to the late Guy Clutton Brock, Hero of Zimbabwe and
graduate of Magdalene College – scholarships at postgraduate level in the
University of Cambridge for the benefit of students from Zimbabwe. Subject to
the availability of funds, it aim to have up to two Clutton-Brock Scholars in
residence at any one time for: (1) a one-year graduate taught course, leading
to a postgraduate qualification (usually the MPhil degree) and (2) a three-year
course of research, leading to the PhD degree.

female students from developing countries who are currently studying in South
Africa at the University of Pretoria or the University of Cape Town. MMMF
awards grants of approximately US$4,000 each.
The Government of Japan offers 20 fellowships per year, to
deserving candidates from UNESCO developing countries, especially the least
developed countries (LDCs), who are eager to undertake research on one the
eligible topics. The aim is to support innovative and imaginative postgraduate
research in the areas of development. A maximum amount between US$6,000 to
US$10,000 will be awarded to selected candidates.
Irish Aid Fellowships for Subject areas relating to Justice,
Law & Order, Education, Macroeconomics Private Sector Development &
Social Development, Gender, HIV/AIDS, Environment & Governance, are awarded
by the Department of Foreign Affairs and are targeted mainly at the countries
in which Ireland has established development cooperation programmes: Ethiopia,
Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Timor Leste and Vietnam,
plus the Palestinian territories. Beneficiaries are supported to undertake
higher-level education and training in Ireland or within the region.
The Nordic Africa Institute (Nordiska Afrikainstitutet), a
center for research, documentation and information on modern Africa in the
Nordic region offer 20 to 30 Travel Scholarship for researchers on development
Issues in Africa with emphasis on Social sciences and closely related fields
such as anthropology, History, Economics, Human Geography.Scholarships are
intended to cover travel expenses to Africa and to contribute to the cost of
local travel and living expenses.
The WWF Prince Bernhard Scholarships (PBS) are awarded to individuals
from Africa, Asia/Pacific, Latin America & Carribean, Eastern Europe &
Middle East who wish to pursue formal studies or professional training in the
field of conservation. The maximum amount for any one scholarship under this
scheme is CHF 10,000, and preferential consideration is given to requests for
less than CHF 10,000.
The Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent
provides participants with an intensive learning opportunity to deepen their
understanding of the United Nations human rights system, instruments and
mechanisms, with a focus on issues of particular relevance to people of African
descent. The Programme will allow the participants to better contribute to the
protection and promotion of civil, political, economic, social and cultural
rights of Afro-descendants in their respective countries. Each fellow is entitled
to a return ticket (economy class) from the country of residence to Geneva,
basic health insurance, and a stipend to cover modest accommodation and other
living expenses for the duration of the Programme.
The roots of the Mansion House Scholarship Scheme can be
traced back to 1997, when Sir Richard Nichols, then Lord Mayor in the City of
London, was particularly impressed during his overseas visits by the high
regard in which the City is held by foreign business communities and by the
number of students who wished to study in the UK in schools and colleges
through business attachments, executive exchanges, and management training. Now
firmly established, the Scheme supports the funding of students from overseas
taking Masters level degree courses at British Universities or to enable
business trainees or officials to undertake study or training in financial and
related business activities. Awards vary in size but are usually in the region
of £5,000 to £7,500.
Under the TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences,
research grants are awarded to high-level promising research projects in
biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics carried out by either individual
scientists or research in Africa and developing countries, to enable them to
purchase the research facilities they need to enhance their productivity.
Research Grants to individual scientists amount to a maximum of US$15,000 while
Research Grants to research units amount to a maximum of US$30,000.
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship programme
(LExS) is offered for excellent Non-EU/EEA students enrolling in a Leiden
University master’s degree programme and for excellent students from all
nationalities enrolling in a Master of Law Advanced Programme or MSc in
International Relations and Diplomacy.
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship programme has 5
types of awards
Platinum- Covers the tuition fee minus the home fee* and an
allowance of €10,000 for living costs
Gold- Covers the tuition fee minus the home fee*
Silver- Covers 75% of the tuition fee
Bronze- Covers 50% of the tuition fee
Ivory- Covers 25 % of the tuition fee
The MENA Scholarship Programme enables mid career
professionals from Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Syria and Tunisia to
undertake a short course in the Netherlands. Each year there are around 120
scholarships available, which are proportionally distributed among the
participating countries. Ideally, half of the scholarships are allocated to
female applicants. A MENA scholarship is a contribution to the costs of the
selected short course and is intended to supplement the salary that the
scholarship holder must continue to receive during the study period.
The Linköping University offers scholarships to new students
with excellent academic results. The scholarship is open for students who have
applied for a master’s programme at the University through the online national
application website (see link below) and who have chosen a programme at
Linköping University as their first priority (ranked as No.1 out of 4), and who
are required to pay tuition fees. Scholarships within the programme LiU
International Scholarships willresult in a tuition fee waiver of 50-100 %
The International Peace Research Association Foundation
(IPRA), USA invites applications for the Dorothy Marchus Senesh Fellowship for
Women from Developing Countries in Peace and Development Studies. The
scholarship is awarded biennially since the first award made in Groningen,
Netherlands in July 1990. Every other year one woman receives school expenses
in the amount of $5,000 per year for two years.
The International Postgraduate Scholarships are available to
postgraduate degree applicants at Liverpool Hope University. Five Postgraduate
Scholarships are available annually. Scholarships are awarded by the decision
of the University Committee and are based on academic merit and social and
community involvement. The scholarships are worth half the tuition fees (e.g.
50% discount on fees, for 2011/12 intake this amounts to between £3,560 and
£5,090).
Each year, the University of Edinburgh, UK offers up to four
Edinburgh Global Health Academy Distance Learning Master’s Scholarship for
International students from Africa and Developing Countries. The scholarship is
mainly for medical/global health and education related courses. Each distance
learning scholarship will have a total value over the duration of the programme
of £9,000 which will be deducted from the tuition fee for the entire part-time
programme of study.
The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), established by
the Research Grants Council (RGC), aims at attracting the best and brightest
students in the world to pursue their PhD programmes in Hong Kong’s
institutions. The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,000
(approximately US$2,600) and a conference and research related travel allowance
of HK$10,000 (approximately US$1,300) per year for each awardee for a period of
three years.
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Ministry of
Science and Technology, India, and TWAS, Italy have instituted a postgraduate
fellowship programme for foreign scholars from developing countries who wish to
pursue research towards a PhD in Biotechnology, tenable at key biotechnology
research institutions in India for a period of up to five years. DBT will
provide a monthly stipend to cover for living costs, food and health insurance.
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarship
programme was established in 1983 and is now an internationally prestigious
scheme with over 41,000 alumni. In 2011-12 there were over 700 Chevening
Scholars studying at universities across the UK. Chevening Scholarships are
currently offered in approximately 110 countries. Chevening awards enable
Scholars to study a one-year postgraduate Master’s course in any discipline at
any UK university.
